Q: What is Lupus Erythematosus?
A: It is an autoimmune disorder which is characterized by joint pain, fatigue, anemia, swelling and Raynaud's phenomenon. A 'butterfly rash' along the cheeks and nose is also seen.
Q: What are Lupus Erythematosus Cells?
A: These are cells found in the bone marrow of people affected with lupus in 50-75% cases. They are a type of white blood cell which has 'eaten' the nuclear material of another cell.
Q: How is an LE cell test done?
A: This test is performed on a blood sample subjected to further filtration and microscopic studies. Blood sample can be obtained either from a vein in the arm or bone marrow.
Q: Are LE cells seen in other diseases?
A: Some evidence of LE cells can be seen in rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, polyarteritis nodosa, Hodgkin disease and persons taking medicines like hydralazine and phenylbutazone.
Q: What does the result of LE cell test indicate?
A: If the number of LE cells counted on the slide fall in the range of 2-30%, then this test is considered to be positive.
