Lupus Anticoagulant (LAC) test detects for the presence of antibodies of the same name, which are synthesized in response to an autoimmune disorder. These antibodies are responsible for excess blood clot formation which leads to numerous disorders.
As part of their normal functioning, the immune system synthesizes antibodies to fight infections, allergies, inflammation etc. However, autoimmune disorders cause the system to synthesize antibodies against the body's own tissues. Lupus anticoagulant antibodies are a type of autoimmune antibodies. They attack healthy cells and destroy their structural as well as functional integrity.

Indications of undergoing LAC test:
- Pain in limbs
- Recurrent sudden pain in the chest
- Respiratory difficulties
- Reddish discoloration of limbs
- Recurrent nausea and vomiting
- Generalized numbing pain
- Recurrent fever
The above mentioned symptoms have little significance in indicating towards LAC test when considered individually. However, when considered as a group, they point towards a deep seated disorder. LAC test is not the first choice of diagnostic test when patients present with these symptoms. ECG, venography, angiography etc. are performed to diagnose blood clots. LAC test may be performed in addition to these tests.
LAC test is part of routine examination in prognosis of an auto immune disorder by the name of anti-phospholipid syndrome. Additionally, it may be advised during pregnancy as well. Testing positive for LAC during pregnancy is a risk factor and requires constant medical supervision. Presence of LAC antibodies enhances the chances of blood clot formation that could lead to miscarriage. However, patients can test positive for LAC even in complete absence of clot formation. Positive results should not be ignored as they could have fatal outcome.
