The anterior pituitary gland secretes luteinizing hormone. This type of hormone is responsible for controlling reproductive system. This test is useful for measuring LH (Luteinizing Hormone) in samples of urine or blood. In females, LH is necessary for regulation of their menstrual cycle along with egg production, while in men it stimulates testosterone production, thus playing a vital role in production of sperms. Luteinizing hormone produces progesterone required for sustaining pregnancy. As mentioned before, high levels of luteinizing hormone test cause infertility. Hence, this test is used for investigating reasons behind infertility in a couple by evaluating sperm count and ovarian reserve. It also looks into causes for earlier-than-normal puberty or delayed puberty and menstrual problems. This test also helps in monitoring response to medications for stimulating ovulation and finding ovulating period.
Different prescription medicines, hormonal medicines or birth control pills need to be discontinued after discussing with the doctor. A blood test is done for detecting luteinizing hormone levels in men and women. The region in forearms area is cleaned with antiseptic solution for extracting blood. A very thin needle is used for taking out blood. Blood thus taken out is collected in a small tube, which is then sent to a laboratory for processing.
The normal ranges of LH are 1.8-8.6 IU/L in men and 5-25 IU/L (before menopause) and 14.2-52.3 IU/L (after menopause) in females. Higher than normal levels in females signify primary ovarian failure. Likewise, abnormal results in men indicate testicular failure. If children have had tumors of brain and spine, brain surgeries in the past, and exposure to radiation, these can be responsible for higher levels of LH and thus early puberty. Thus LH test can help the doctor in detecting infertility issues, reproductive systemic disorders in adults and puberty issues in children. Doctor may also order FSH test along with LH test for female patients.
