Lipoprotein A / LP(a) Test Cost

Lipoprotein A test helps in determining the levels of a specific type of low density lipid present in the blood stream. It is directly responsible towards maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system. It is often performed for patients who have a history of cardiovascular distress. It is not the first line of diagnosis in patients suffering presenting with cardiac complaints. Levels of triglycerides, cholesterol and other lipoproteins are usually checked first.

ECG or angiography may also be required in such patients. If these diagnostic tests still leave a doubt in the physician's mind, Lipoprotein A levels are checked.

Lipoprotein A is chemically composed of a core of fat and cholesterol which is surrounded by a rim of proteins. This lipoprotein circulates through a complex network of blood vessels and may tend to get deposited on the insides of vascular walls. If this happens recurrently, the fat deposits increase, leading to a narrowed vascular lumen. If the coronary arteries get blocked due to lipoprotein A deposits, it could lead to reduced blood supply to the heart muscles. That may cause myocardial ischemia and other similar cardiac disorders.

A venous blood sample is required to measure blood levels of Lipoprotein A. A vein in the patient's upper arm is chosen to withdraw the blood sample. The sample is preserved by mixing it with anticoagulants till it is tested. Advanced medical technology and highly calibrated tools are used to perform the tests and obtain accurate results. Levels of Lipoprotein A in a healthy person are usually lesser than 30mg/dL. Levels above 30 are harmful and a probable risk for developing cardiovascular disorders.

Other disorders which disturb the levels of Lipoprotein A include severe hypothyroidism, abnormally elevated blood sugar levels, disturbed levels of estrogen, etc.

Lipoprotein A test should be performed only if it has been prescribed by a physician or cardiologist.

Lipoprotein A / LP(a) Test FAQs
Q: What is Lipoprotein (a)?
A: It is a type of molecule with one part lipid (LDL cholesterol) and the other part protein (apolipoprotein a).
Q: Why is Lipoprotein (a) test required?
A: This test is performed in order to track levels of lipoprotein (a) in the bloodstream. It has been linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, stroke and atherosclerosis.
Q: How is Lipoprotein (a) test performed?
A: A fasting blood sample is the requisite for this test. Blood is withdrawn from a vein and subjected to further testing in a laboratory.
Q: What is the normal range of lipoprotein (a) levels in the body?
A: Ideally, lipoprotein (a) levels should be less than 14 mg/dL. But these levels require correlation with other clinical data to arrive at a conclusive diagnosis.
Q: What is the treatment of excessive lipoprotein (a) in the body?
A: High levels of lipoprotein (a) can be managed by consuming niacin, L-lysine, L-proline and ascorbic acid in diet or in form of nutritional supplements. A healthy diet and exercise are necessary as well.
