Why is Uterus Removal Surgery Needed?

Uterus removal surgery is required in cases when the uterus has suffered irreparable damage due to some health condition, or patient's health is failing due to some disorder affecting the uterus. Some of the conditions when uterus removal surgery may be thought of are mentioned below:

  • Fibroids: Fibroids are non cancerous outgrowths arising from within the wall of uterus. They may lead to menstrual disturbances and infertility in women. If medical treatment and surgery to remove fibroids does not show positive results, hysterectomy is the only viable option left.

  • Cancer of Uterus: Malignant affection of uterus can prove fatal if prompt treatment is not initiated. If cancer is widespread or patient is not responding to any other treatment, uterus removal surgery is performed as a last resort.

  • Prolapse of Uterus: Ligaments and muscles which keep the uterus in place within pelvic cavity may give away at times. If the prolapse is relatively severe and it is impossible to realign the uterus to its former position, hysterectomy may be required.

  • Uterine Hemorrhage: Uterine hemorrhage is an indication of various disorders. Recurrent hemorrhage may occur due to menorrhagia, metrorrhagia, cancer of uterus, etc. Many times, women suffer from uterine hemorrhage for some time following child birth. If hemorrhage is severe in any of the above mentioned cases, the ultimate treatment left is hysterectomy.

Uterus removal surgery is almost always the last choice of treatment, if nothing else works. Gynecologists will try every other treatment method before reaching the conclusion that hysterectomy is needed.

Patients should consult with an experienced gynecologist if they experience any of the symptoms of health conditions mentioned above. It is important to consider all pre-operative details in order to have a successful surgery. There are several post procedure instructions as well which should be followed well so that there are no health complications after surgery.
