CD4 Test Cost

Determined by flow cytometry, used in the diagnosis of immune dysfunction, especially AIDS, in which a severely depressed count is the single best predictor of imminent opportunistic infection and an increase is associated with therapeutic effect of drugs. May also be expressed CD4:CD8 lymphocyte ratio, but CD8 count is more labile and may diminish the value of the CD4 counts. Imprecision in total WBC and differential may cause 25% variability in CD4 values.

CD4 Test FAQs
Q: What are CD4 cells?
A: Also known as T-helper cells or CD4 T lymphocytes, they are part of a white blood cell type called T-cells or T-lymphocytes. They protect the body from infection and stimulate the immune system after detecting any viruses, bacterias, or other intruders.
Q: What is the CD4 count of a healthy adult?
A: 500-1,200 cells/mm³.
Q: What do the test results mean?
A: A progressive decrease in CD4 count below 200-250 cells/mm³ indicates that the patient is HIV positive. Less than 200 cells/mm³ – pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) and less than 50 cells/mm³ – mycobacterium avium complex (MAC).
Q: How often is the test ordered?
A: After being first diagnosed with HIV for baseline measurement, 3-6 months during treatment, and 6-12 months after CD4 levels start to increase.
Q: What could influence the CD4 levels?
A: Time of the day (morning/evening), vaccination, herpes simplex virus infection, influenza, pneumonia, and other acute diseases, stress, or cancer chemotherapy. Discount Offers
