Filariasis is a disorder caused by Wuchereria bancrofti which is a thread like filamentous parasite. It gets in contact with human body via mosquito bite. Mosquitoes breeding in water infested with Wuchereria larvae are carriers of the disease. The parasite then invades the person's lymphatic system. This leads to signs and symptoms which are the earliest indication of filariasis. They prompt physicians to advise a Microfilaria parasite test. Some of these signs and symptoms are mentioned below.

Get a microfilaria parasite test done if you have any of the below mentioned symptoms:

  • Lymphedema of unexplained origin
  • Elephantiasis
  • Unexplained fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes

These symptoms are due to the adult parasite. Microfilaria test will detect presence of immature stages of the parasite which circulate in the bloodstream of an infected person.

Microfilaria test is performed in pathology labs equipped with adequate facilities for diagnosis of the Wuchereria Bancrofti parasite. A pathologist having expertise in the field of parasitology studies the blood samples obtained for microfilaria test.

Microfilaria are maximum in numbers in a patient's blood stream during night time. Therefore, blood sample for the test is preferably collected at night. A blood sample collected from a vein in the patient's upper arm is used. The sample is stored mixed with anticoagulants. A smear is prepared using the blood sample which is then studied under a high resolution microscope. Thicker the smear, better are the chances of diagnosing Wuchereria Bancrofti. A special chemical known as Geimsa stain is used to treat the slide. This allows for easy detection of the parasite. Normal values of Microfilaria parasite test are 100 kU/L.

Positive result Microfilaria parasite should be reported to an infectious disease specialist immediately. It is important to start treatment promptly avoid health complications. Regular physical examination and medical investigations should done periodically.

Patients may also be asked to undergo malaria parasite test to rule out the disorder. Additionally, a CBC test, hemogram, E.S.R test, may also be advised to the patient.

Microfilaria Parasite Test FAQs
Q: What is microfilaria?
A: Microfilaria is a first-stage larvae of the parasitic nematode, Wuchereria bancrofti, the causative agent of several severe parasitic diseases, and is present in the lymphatic system of human host. They are generally found in deep veins during the day and migrate to the peripheral blood vessels at night.
Q: What are the symptoms of filariasis?
A: The most definitive symptom of filariasis is elephantiasis and it usually occurs in the lower extremities of the body. Other symptoms may include fever, chills, swollen lymph nodes, acute inflammation of lymphatic vessels, and edema.
Q: How is the parasite transmitted?
A: When mosquitoes feed on the human host at night, the microfilaria present in the peripheral blood are ingested by the mosquito and these microfilaria mature there. After an incubation period of 10 days inside the mosquito, the mature microfilaria are then transmitted to the next human host that the mosquito feeds on.
Q: After the infection manifests, what time is preferable to collect the sample for test?
A: The number of microfilaria peaks in the time period of 10pm to 4am and thus a venous sample collected from the upper arm, in the time period of 12am-2am, will provide an accurate diagnosis.
Q: What is the normal value for the detection test?
A: The normal value of microfilaria parasite test is 100 kU/l for all age groups.
