Indications of undergoing protein test are given below:
- Swelling of arms and legs
- White urine
Protein test may be performed using a blood sample or a urine sample. Blood sample is collected from a vein in the patient's upper arm. The sample is labeled and stored away from light till the time of testing. Precautions are taken to avoid blood clot formation. This can be done by mixing the collected blood sample with a neutral anti-coagulant. It is important to note that the anti-coagulant should not alter the protein levels of the collected blood sample.
A urine sample is collected in a clean and sterile flask and stored in a cool and dry place till it is tested. Preferably, the first urine sample collected early in the morning is used for performing this test. Urine sample having high content of protein usually has a turbid and white appearance. Expert pathologists can detect elevated protein content merely be observing a urine sample. Detailed examination reveals the exact levels of protein.
Normal levels of protein in blood are:
Albumin = 3.5-5.5 g/dL
Globulin = 2-3.5 g/dL
Normal levels of protein in urine are:
Albumin = < 5 mg/dL
Globulin = Not detectable
Sometimes patients may be asked to submit a blood sample and a urine sample both to obtain better clarity about the patient’s health.
Disorders like chronic renal failure, diabetic nephropathy, polycystic kidney syndrome, can be diagnosed using this test. Protein levels may also be elevated in case of more deep seated pathology like autoimmune disorders or cancers.
Abnormal test results should not be neglected. It is advisable to consult with a physician at the earliest in order to establish a confirmed diagnosis. Depending on the patient’s over all health and symptomatology, various other diagnostic tests may be advised.
Urine routine, blood sugar test, scans like sonography of kidneys may be required in addition to protein test. Further medical treatment is dependent on the test results of these diagnostic tests. Treatment options may vary from one patient to another depending on the prognosis of their health condition. Timely intervention helps the patient to return to their normal health soon.
