What is MRI of Brain?

Of the many imaging techniques available today, MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging is among the safest and painless methods used. An MRI combines the strength of magnetic field and radio waves which interact with the tissues in the body to produce an image which is seen on a computer. Different tissues interact differently with magnetic waves and as a result, abnormalities in the body can be easily differentiated from normal.

A brain MRI is a scan of the brain performed inside a cylindrical/tunnel shaped machine. It takes about 30-60 minutes to complete this procedure. MRI scans of the brain are available in different magnetic strengths, such as 1.5 or 3 Tesla.

In order for the radiologist to visualize the internal structures more clearly, he/she can order a contrast MRI. A special dye known as contrast medium is injected into the veins and scanning is done once the dye reaches the desired place. The dye highlights the area of interest which helps to outline the areas of abnormality very easily. Fasting before a contrast MRI scan is mandatory. 

Metallic substances placed inside the body like aneurysm clips, pacemakers, defibrillators or dental implants can prove to be a hindrance during an MRI scan as well as get deflected from their original position because of the production of strong magnetic waves. Hence it is important to notify the radiologist and technician about any such implants inside your body.

A brain MRI gives the advantage of creating 3 dimensional images which can be visualized in cross-sections, very similar to a CAT scan. Soft tissues are viewed best with this imaging modality.
