Creatine Phosphokinase (CPK) test is a pathology test which helps to determine the levels of an enzyme by the same name circulating in the blood stream. CPK test is useful to diagnose cardiac disorders.
CPK is an enzyme which gets released when muscles sustain stress, injury or degeneration. Cardiac muscles perform the important task of supplying oxygenated blood to all other body tissues. These muscles are in turn supplied with fresh oxygenated blood by the coronary arteries. Any interruption in this supply will lead to the cardiac muscles getting damaged. This causes CPK to be released which can be detected upon examining a blood sample obtained from the patient.

Indications of undergoing CPK test:
- Chest pain
- Difficulty in breathing
- Atherosclerosis
- Myocardial ischemia
- Muscular dystrophy

CPK test is often performed on an emergency basis for patients who present with symptoms of heart attack.
It is important to perform CPK test within a stipulated time period in case of heart disorders. This is because levels of CPK remain high only for a few hours after a patient has had a heart attack. Test results will help to determine if the heart muscles are recovering well after sustaining injury.
A venous blood sample is withdrawn from a vein located in the patient's upper arm. The sample is stored under extremely sterile conditions in a cool dry place till it is tested. Advanced medical technology and highly calibrated instruments help in obtaining accurate results of CPK test.
