Creatinine clearance test checks for the ability of kidneys to get rid of excessive creatinine via urine. The test is performed in a pathology lab equipped with modern medical technology.
Creatinine is one of the waste products synthesized by human body while performing day-to-day physiological functions. If allowed to circulate freely in the blood, creatinine will cause harm to other body tissues. It is the function of kidneys to excrete this excess creatinine out of the human body. The efficiency with which kidneys are able to perform this function, can be detected by performing creatinine clearance test.

Indications of Creatinine clearance test:
- Kidney dysfunction
- Abnormal results of urine routine test
- Abnormal results of kidney function test
- Hypertension
- Diabetes Mellitus
Other health disorders or symptoms than the ones mentioned above could also be indications for undergoing creatinine clearance test.
Methods of calculating results of this test are mentioned below:
- Creatinine levels are calculated by using a venous blood sample from the patient. Values of creatinine help in determining the rate at which kidneys filter wastes from urine (A.K.A glomerular filtration rate or GFR). Higher the levels of creatinine, lower is the GFR and creatinine clearance.
- Several samples of urine are collected from the patient over a course of 24 hours. Levels of creatinine in these samples provide an idea about the rate at which kidney excretes creatinine from the body.
For the second method, patients are required to collect their urine sample for 24 hours in a clean and sterilized flask. Any contamination might alter the results of the test. Patients should ensure that they handle the sample with care and carry it to pathology lab well in time for testing.
Other tests which may be advised along with creatinine clearance test are kidney function test, kidney scans, blood sugar test etc.
