Renal profile test checks for various parameters which help to evaluate the health of kidneys.
Some of these parameters are as follows:
- Creatinine: Creatinine is a waste product synthesized as a result of protein metabolism. It is excreted out of the body through urine. Kidneys are unable to excrete the required amount of creatinine in case of any disorders.
- BUN: Blood Urea Nitrogen is also a product of protein metabolism. Levels of BUN get elevated in case of any kidney disorder.
- The above two parameters help in deciphering the BUN: Creatinine ratio, which will be disturbed in case of kidney disorders.
- Electrolytes: Blood levels of sodium, potassium and chloride may be disturbed in case of (incomplete sentence)
The above mentioned tests are performed by collecting a blood sample from the patient. Blood is withdrawn from a vein in the patient's upper arm. The blood sample is stored in a cool and dry place till the time of testing.
A urine sample may also be required to check for levels of albumin, calcium etc. This helps in assessing health of kidneys.
Patients who are scheduled for surgery may be required to undergo Renal Profile test. This helps the surgeon to determine whether the patient’s body is capable of undergoing the stress associated with surgery. People who plan to become recipients or donors in organ transplant surgery have to undergo renal profile test before the procedure.
Renal Profile test is helpful in diagnosing health conditions like kidney failure, diabetic nephropathy, nephrotic syndrome etc. Other tests like urine routine, urine culture, blood sugar levels , kidney scans, may be needed along with renal profile test.
Abnormal results of renal profile test should not be ignored as they could indicate underlying pathological changes. Consulting a nephrologist at the earliest is advisable in such cases. Renal profile test is a great diagnostic tool for primary investigation and follow ups of patients undergoing treatment for kidney disorders.
