Indications of undergoing CA 125 test are mentioned below:
- Irregular vaginal bleeding
- Irregular menstruation
- Menorrhagia
- Heaviness and dragging sensation in pelvic region
- Associated weight loss
- Fatigue
Symptoms other than those mentioned above could also necessitate undergoing CA 125 test. Cancer of ovaries, endometrium, fallopian tubes, cervix, can be diagnosed using this method. Non cancerous disorders like uterine fibroids, menstrual disturbances are also likely to elevate blood levels of CA 125. This test provides initial diagnosis of several gynec disorders. However, further investigation is needed to zero in on a specific health disorder.
To perform CA 125 test, a venous blood sample is taken from the patient. The sample is studied using highly calibrated instruments in order to obtain accurate results. A level of more than 46 U/ml is considered abnormal and requires further investigation.
Apart from diagnosing cancer, CA 125 test is also useful to screen patients who have a risk of developing cancer. Patients who are being treated for cancer are asked to undergo CA 125 test to track their progress. Reports of consecutive tests help doctors to assess if the current treatment is being useful to the patient. Test results may vary from one pathology lab to another, so patients are required to check with their doctor after the test results are obtained.
Other cancer antigens include CA 19.9, CA 15.3, CA 27.29. Each cancer antigen is specific to a particular tissue or system in the body. Apart from testing for cancer antigens, patients may also be required to undergo blood tests like CBC, ESR, Liver Function Test, Kidney Function Test and scans like MRI, CT scan, USG etc.
